My husband finally cut off his mother and sister after they had the nerve to demand that we hand over our dream house to his sister, her unemployed husband, and their six children. For years, my in-laws had a strained, unhealthy hold over Jacob, and for a long time I tried to tell myself it was simply the kind of complicated family loyalty people carry with them into adulthood. Eventually, though, it stopped being something I could politely ignore.

It began pressing into my marriage, my home, and my peace. Jacob grew up as the favorite child. His mother was extremely close to him, the kind of close that everyone in the family treated as normal because it had always been that way.

Jacob has told me many times that his father worked long hours when he was young, so his mother filled the house with her attention, and most of that attention landed on him. His sister, Sarah, was not treated the same way. I do believe their mother loved both of her children, but anyone sitting at that kitchen table for ten minutes could see that Jacob was the golden one.

I think Sarah felt that difference all her life. Maybe that was why Jacob always tried so hard to be the good older brother. He checked on her, helped her, answered her calls, and made room for her even when she behaved in ways that crossed every reasonable boundary.

At first, I tried to be understanding. Families have their rhythms. Siblings can be close.

Mothers can be protective. But Jacob’s mother and Sarah did not simply care about him. They acted as if he belonged to them.
