When I was seven years old, I announced to an entire apartment courtyard that I would marry my neighbor. Not quietly. Not sweetly.
Not in the soft, innocent way children sometimes say impossible things while picking flowers or playing make-believe. I screamed it with tears on my face, dirt on my knees, and enough stubbornness to make every adult in our building stop what they were doing and stare.
