The first sign that Easter dinner was about to explode was not the insult. It was my brother’s face.
Vivian, the girlfriend Travis had known for barely five weeks, lifted her fork to her lips, tasted my wife Brooke’s sweet potato casserole, and immediately spat it into her napkin. My mother gasped.
My father stopped carving the ham. Brooke, who had spent two days cooking for everyone, went completely still.
Vivian smiled like she had been waiting for an audience. “This is completely tasteless.”
Heat rushed behind my eyes.
Brooke had welcomed that woman, complimented her dress, poured her wine, and ignored every little jab Vivian made about our house, our food, and Brooke being “just a pastry chef.” But this was not a jab. It was a public slap.
Before I could speak, Brooke placed her fork down with terrifying calm. “Honey,” she said, “you can barely keep a man for three months.
Don’t talk to me about taste.”
The room died.
Vivian’s face hardened. Travis jumped up so fast his chair hit the floor. “We’re leaving.”
My father stood too.
He was not loud, which made him scarier. “If you walk out that door for her, don’t bother coming back.”
“Dad,” Travis said, but his voice cracked.
Vivian hooked her fingers around his wrist and pulled him closer. Then she looked at all of us with that polished, poisonous smile.
“Fine. But before you play perfect family, maybe ask Travis what he promised me.”
The blood drained from his face.
I turned to my brother. “What is she talking about?”
