Last weekend, I took my dad to the mall to buy him a new pair of shoes. He’s ninety two now, and shopping trips like this have slowed down considerably over the years, but he still insists on trying on every pair himself, walking a small lap around the store to be sure.
Once we wrapped up, we headed to the food court for a quick meal and found seats beside a teenage boy whose hair stood straight up in a riot of color. Bright green, red, orange, and blue, all shooting upward like a painted sunrise someone had gotten a little too enthusiastic with.

I held my breath. I knew my dad’s wit was still razor sharp, age had taken plenty from him over the years, but never that. My food nearly stuck in my throat while I braced myself for whatever was about to come out of his mouth.
He set his fork down slowly, offered the boy a gentle smile, and answered in a voice so unexpected in its warmth that even the teenager leaned in a little to hear the rest.
