My Son Charged Me $600 a Month to Stay in His Guest Room… Then I Learned His Mother-in-Law Had Been Living There for Free for Over a Year.

PART2

At 5:43 the next morning, I came downstairs in slippers and found Marjorie already in the kitchen. She had coffee brewing, two lunch boxes open, oatmeal on the stove, and a little pile of permission slips beside the toaster.

Carter came in at six asking where his soccer socks were. Marjorie knew.

Ivy came down ten minutes later with one shoe and a spelling test she had forgotten to mention. Marjorie signed the folder, found the shoe, braided Ivy’s hair, packed fruit, scraped oatmeal from the pot, and reminded Trent that the pediatric dentist had called.

At 7:12, Allison kissed both kids and rushed out for work. Trent left seven minutes later.

Marjorie looked at me. “Still look free?”

I deserved that. “No.”

She laughed, but there was no triumph in it.

For fourteen months, she had been doing school mornings, three pickups a week, dinner most Tuesdays and Thursdays, and childcare whenever Allison worked late. Daycare for two children had become impossible after Allison reduced her hours following a difficult year at work.

Marjorie moved in “temporarily” and simply never moved back out.

“Do you want to live here?” I asked.

She rinsed a bowl. “Not anymore.”

That surprised me.

She had been approved for a one-bedroom apartment near church two weeks earlier. She had not told Allison.

“Why not?”

“Because the minute I leave, they have to solve this.” She pointed toward the lunch boxes. “And I love them enough to keep postponing my own solution.”

I understood that sentence better than I wanted to.

That evening, Trent found me in the garage. I asked why he charged me $600 when he had invited me to stay.
