A woman refused to give up the window seat she’d paid for when a mother demanded it for her 10-year-old son. But after the woman accused her of shoving the boy, he quietly revealed that their encounter was no coincidence.
I’d paid extra for a window seat and was already settled into 14A when a woman stopped beside me with a boy who looked about ten.
“Would you mind switching seats with my son?”
I looked at the boy, then at her.
“Where’s your seat?”
“32B.”
I stared at her.
She wanted me to give up the window seat I’d paid for and move ten rows back into a middle seat.
“Sorry, no. I paid extra for this seat.”
Her expression changed immediately.
“He’s ten.”
“I understand. But I’m keeping my seat.”
She stared at me as if I’d just insulted her child.
“Unbelievable. You’re making a CHILD sit alone because you want to look out a window.”
People nearby started looking over.
“I’m sorry, but I’m not moving.”
She stood there for another second, clearly expecting me to change my mind.
Then she turned around.
“Fine.”
I thought that was the end of it.
The boy started to sit down in the empty seat beside me. As he did, his backpack bumped against my arm.
“Sorry,” he mumbled.
“It’s okay.”
A few minutes later, the woman came back with a flight attendant.
“This is her,” the woman said.
The flight attendant smiled politely.
“Ma’am, I’m told there’s been some confusion about the seats.”
“No confusion. This is 14A. It’s my seat.”
The woman immediately cut in.
“She agreed to switch with my son, and now she’s refusing to move.”
I stared at her.
“What? I never agreed to anything.”
