“Mom, what are you doing here?”
Those were the first words my oldest son said when he saw me on my 70th birthday. Not “Happy birthday.” Not “I’m sorry.” Not even, “Mom, we can explain.”
Just: “What are you doing here?”
Behind him stood my daughter and my youngest son, the same three children who, less than an hour earlier, had each told me they couldn’t make it to my birthday dinner. And sitting across from me was a complete stranger I had just asked to pretend to be my son for five minutes.
