What He Carried
A Story About the Things That Find Their Way Home, and the People Who Leave Paths for Others to Follow
There are things you put away because you think you are done with them.
You wrap them carefully or not carefully, depending on the day and how much the thing costs you to touch. You put them somewhere they won’t be seen. You tell yourself this is practical — making space, moving forward, not letting the past occupy square footage in your present. You tell yourself you are not running from anything. You are simply organizing.
Then one day, a child you have just met for the first time comes through your front door with everything he owns in a black garbage bag, and you carry his bag upstairs to unpack it for him because you want him to understand that he no longer has to live out of a trash bag, and you turn it upside down onto the new blue bedding, and the things fall out one by one — jeans, t-shirts, a sweatshirt, a stuffed bear with one ear repaired in crooked blue thread — and then something heavy drops from under the last shirt, and you stare at it, and you know it.
Not something like it.
Not a version of it.
That exact object.
With that exact mark on the underside.
And the thing you thought you were done with turns out to have been waiting for you this entire time, in a black garbage bag, in the hands of an eight-year-old boy.
My name is Claire Carter.
I’m thirty-nine years old, and I have been waiting for most of my adult life for things I wasn’t sure would arrive.
I don’t say this with self-pity. It’s simply the texture of how my life has been shaped — by waiting. Waiting to meet the right person, which happened at thirty-one when I met Daniel at a community fundraiser and he asked me a question about the event and I gave a much longer answer than he had anticipated and he laughed and asked another question. Waiting to buy the house, which happened at thirty-three after years of saving and two failed bids on other properties. Waiting to get pregnant, which happened at thirty-four and then ended at twelve weeks, and then happened again at thirty-five and ended the same way, and then didn’t happen again at all.
What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
