When my mother-in-law started treating our wedding gift envelopes like reimbursement, I wanted to stop her in front of everyone. My mom quietly told me not to. By breakfast the next morning, she had a much more deliberate plan.
My mother-in-law didn’t even wait for our wedding reception to end before she started collecting our guests’ envelopes.
I found out because my cousin leaned toward me at the bar around ten and said, very quietly, “Is your mother-in-law supposed to be taking the cards?”
I thought I’d misheard her. “What?”
She nodded toward the gift table. I turned around.
Linda was standing beside the white card box we had put near the entrance.
Her large tote bag was open on a chair next to her.
She wasn’t moving the box.
She wasn’t asking anyone for help.
She was taking envelopes out by the handful and putting them into her bag.
For a few seconds, I just watched.
I was still in my wedding dress.
There were probably 200 people in the room.
My husband, Eric, was across the dance floor talking to his uncle.
And his mother was emptying our card box into her purse.
I walked over.
I remember being surprised by how calm my voice sounded.
“Linda, what are you doing?”
She looked up like I’d asked why she was drinking water.
“Oh, sweetheart, don’t worry about it. I’m just putting these somewhere safe.”
“They’re already safe.”
She smiled.
“Not really. People are coming and going.”
“Then I’ll ask one of the bridesmaids to watch the table.”
Her smile tightened. “Honey, it’s fine.”
Then she reached for another stack.
I put my hand on top of the box. “Linda.”
