“No,” I told the locksmith.
“My husband just married my sister.”
There was a long silence.
Then Mike said, “I’ll be there in twenty minutes.”
By four, the exterior locks were changed.
I placed Eric’s clothes, golf clubs, toiletries, and precious espresso machine inside the garage.
Then I photographed everything.
At 6:03, I emailed a divorce attorney.
At 6:17, Mom finally texted.
Claire, please don’t do anything dramatic. Vanessa is pregnant.
I stared at the message.
There it was.
The excuse they had apparently rehearsed.
I replied with nothing.
At eight, my attorney called.
When I explained the Vegas wedding, she became very quiet.
“Claire, unless there’s something you haven’t told me, Eric cannot legally marry Vanessa while he’s married to you.”
“I know.”
“Good. Don’t contact either of them.”
Then she asked about property.
I explained the house.
The inheritance.
The separated finances.
And one detail Eric had apparently forgotten.
Three years earlier, his employer had offered him a chance to purchase equity in a new regional distribution venture.
Eric couldn’t afford the investment.
I could.
The shares were purchased through Dawson Capital LLC.
My company.
Eric bragged about “our investment” constantly.
Legally, however, he owned none of it.
By noon, his messages had changed.
The insults disappeared.
Claire, call me.
Then:
My cards aren’t working.
Finally:
We need to discuss the house.
I smiled at that one.
There was no “we” left in my house.
But at 2:11 p.m., my attorney called again.
This time, her voice sounded different.
What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
