A handwritten note hidden behind an airplane window shade was strange enough. But when Katrina paid for in-flight Wi-Fi and contacted the number written on it, the stranger’s first question confused her even more: “Where is the plane taking you?”
When I boarded my flight from San Diego to Detroit, I had exactly one plan: put my headphones in, fall asleep, and wake up somewhere over Michigan.
I had seat 18A, a window seat, which I was happy about because I always liked recording takeoff.
As soon as I sat down, I reached up and opened the window shade.
A folded napkin slipped out from behind it and landed beside me.
I assumed somebody had shoved trash in there on the previous flight.
I was literally about to throw it away when I noticed handwriting inside.
So I unfolded it.
“If you’re sitting in this seat, please text me. It’s important.”
Underneath was a phone number.
I stared at it for a second and almost laughed.
What kind of plan was that?
Whoever found the note would obviously be on an airplane, with their phone in airplane mode.
I folded it back up, shoved it into the seat pocket, and forgot about it.
Or at least I tried to.
We took off, everything was normal, and I put my headphones on.
But I couldn’t sleep.
I kept thinking about that note.
Why did it have to be the person sitting in this exact seat?
And why was it supposedly so important?
Eventually my curiosity got the better of me.
The plane had Wi-Fi.
It was about $15, which felt ridiculous to spend just because a stranger had left a napkin behind a window shade, but at that point I knew I wasn’t going to stop thinking about it.
