Grandpa’s final wish brought our entire family to a cabin we hadn’t visited in years. What I found inside made my mother panic—and revealed why everyone had prospered while I struggled.
Growing up, I was incredibly close to my grandpa Everett. My parents worked long hours, so I spent most afternoons, weekends, and summers with him.
I was devastated.
He taught me how to fish, helped with my homework, and listened whenever I needed someone to talk to. He was practically my second parent.
When he passed away at 86, I was devastated.
Unfortunately, half the family seemed more interested in what he’d left behind. Relatives who barely visited suddenly had questions about his house, savings, and will.
He handed me an old key.
So when Grandpa’s lawyer called us together a few days after the funeral, everyone showed up pretty damn fast.
But instead of reading the will, he handed me an old key.
“Your grandfather left one condition,” he explained. “Take the whole family to my old cabin before anyone reads the will.”
The lawyer nodded.
I stared at him.
“Seriously?”
The lawyer nodded.
My aunt immediately complained about the drive. My cousin asked why we couldn’t just read the will first.
But my parents reacted differently.
“I’m afraid not.”
“Everett wouldn’t have wanted everyone making such a fuss,” Mom insisted. “That cabin hasn’t been used in years.”
Dad pulled the lawyer aside, but I heard him asking whether there was any legal way around the trip.
“I’m afraid not,” the lawyer replied. “I’ll accompany you to ensure his instructions are followed.”
