She knew very little about the woman whose house she had entered, wearing someone else’s clothes and drinking from a cup that did not belong to her. That was the problem with Julian and the people who had supported his decisions. They had spent so much time discussing their future that they had failed to consider the facts about the life I had built before they arrived.
I reached into my handbag and took out my phone.
Julian smiled. “Who are you calling? Your lawyer? You can make as many calls as you want, Vivian. It won’t change my decision.”
“I am not trying to change your decision,” I replied.
I dialed a number, and when the call connected, I spoke calmly.
“Good morning, Mr. Collins. It’s Vivian. The situation we discussed yesterday has occurred. Please proceed with the next step we agreed upon.”
My attorney paused briefly before answering. “Understood. I’ll be there shortly. Have you signed any documents?”
“No.”
“Good. Please keep all the paperwork and avoid making any further agreements until we have reviewed everything together.”
When the call ended, Julian’s confident expression had changed.
“Mr. Collins?” he asked. “Your attorney? Do you honestly believe that hiring a lawyer will change the fact that our marriage is ending?”
“No,” I answered. “Our marriage may be ending, but that does not automatically make you the owner of my property.”
His father, Richard, stopped arranging the boxes near the kitchen.
“Your property?” he asked. “Julian has lived here for six years. He has contributed to this household, and his business has helped support your lifestyle.”
