My Husband Mocked My Little Bakery at Dinner, but the Next Day His Boss Showed Up With a Surprise

My husband called my bakery a hobby in front of his whole family.

The next morning, his boss walked into my shop and showed me a photograph that made my hands go cold.

And before I could even ask what it meant, the bell above my door rang again.

I looked up.

And there stood the last person I expected to see walk into my bakery at seven-fifteen on a Monday morning.

But to understand why that moment hit me the way it did, you have to go back to the night before. To a birthday dinner, a chocolate torte I stayed up until midnight making, and one sentence my husband said with a laugh.

His mother’s sixty-fifth birthday was on a Sunday.

Diane Pierce did not like restaurants. She said the food was overpriced and the waiters hovered. So every birthday, every holiday, every anniversary, the whole family came to her big brick house in the suburbs, and everybody brought something.

I always brought dessert.

That year, I made a flourless chocolate torte with raspberry sauce and fresh berries piled on top. Diane had mentioned it once, two years earlier, at a wedding. “That’s the only dessert I’ve ever really loved,” she’d said, pointing at a slice on the buffet. I’d remembered. I always remember what people love to eat. That’s half of what a baker does.

I’d worked a twelve-hour shift at the shop on Saturday. Then I’d come home and started the torte at eight-thirty. It needs a slow bake in a water bath and then it has to chill overnight. I finally went to bed at 12:40. My feet ached so much I put them up on a pillow.

Hudson was already asleep.
