Nine Days After Our Engagement, My Fiancé Left for Military Service and Our Lives Changed Forever

“I’m sorry,” Danny whispered. I sat beside him in a quiet living room, trying to understand how the boy I had loved at eighteen could be sitting in front of me nearly six decades later. I was seventy-seven now. For most of my life, I had believed Danny had died while serving overseas. I had kept his old letters and the inexpensive ring he gave me, but I had never expected to see him again.

“You let me believe you were gone for fifty-eight years,” I said.

He lowered his eyes. “I know I hurt you.”

I wanted to ask a hundred questions at once. I wanted to be angry, to reach for his hand, and to turn back time. Instead, I took a breath and asked the question that had followed me for most of my life.

“Why?”

Danny explained that he had been seriously injured during his military service. After being moved between medical facilities, he eventually received treatment in San Antonio. His injuries required a long recovery, and for a time he struggled with his memory. When he became well enough to understand what had happened, he asked about me.

His mother visited him and told him that I would be better off believing he had died. She worried that his injuries and uncertain future would make life difficult for me. Danny was young, frightened, and ashamed of how much his life had changed. Instead of trusting me to make my own decision, he accepted her advice.

“She said you deserved a normal life,” he told me.

I shook my head. “You didn’t get to decide what I could handle.”

“You’re right.”

He told me that he had eventually written a letter explaining that he was alive and hoping to contact me. His mother found the letter and destroyed it. She later told him she had sent it, and when no reply came, he assumed I had moved on.
