My father didn’t raise his voice.
He didn’t threaten my husband.
He didn’t even look angry.
He simply stood beside our empty refrigerator, rolled up his sleeves, and made a phone call.
“Rebecca? It’s Thomas Bennett. I need you to come to my daughter’s apartment. Bring the documents we discussed last month.”
My husband, Ryan, laughed.
“Who is Rebecca? Your girlfriend?”
Dad ignored him.
“And Rebecca,” he continued, his voice suddenly harder, “bring the bank records too. I think it’s time my son-in-law learned exactly whose money he’s been spending.”
Ryan stopped smiling.
I stared at my father.
“What bank records?”
Dad ended the call.
Then he looked at me.
“Emily, sweetheart, there’s something I should have told you a long time ago.”
Before I could answer, my six-year-old son, Noah, tugged at my sleeve.
“Mommy?”
I looked down.
“Yes, baby?”
His voice was small.
“Can Grandpa buy us bread?”
My heart shattered.
Because my little boy wasn’t asking for a toy.
He wasn’t asking for candy.
He wasn’t asking to go to the movies.
He was asking for bread.
And the man who had taken every dollar of my paycheck was standing three feet away, looking annoyed that anyone considered this a problem.
Dad knelt in front of Noah.
“Buddy, how about we go get some groceries?”
Noah’s eyes widened.
“Real groceries?”
Dad swallowed.
“All the groceries you want.”
Noah thought for a moment.
“Can we get peanut butter?”
Dad’s face changed.
For one terrible second, I thought he might cry.
Instead, he smiled.
“We can get two jars.”
Noah threw his arms around him.
And that was when I realized how badly I’d failed to understand what was happening inside my own home.
