Danny had spent the afternoon helping Kayla prepare Thanksgiving dinner in their small kitchen when he stopped wiping the counter.
“You have somewhere else to be, Mike?”
Michael looked up. “I have responsibilities.”
Danny nodded quietly. “So do I.”
For a moment, nobody spoke. The boys sat on the living room rug, building a tower with their plastic blocks. Kayla stood near the stove, listening without interrupting.
I picked up Michael’s envelope first. “Your father asked me to give you this.”
Michael opened it, apparently expecting an important document. Instead, he found a single sheet of paper. He read it once, then looked at it again.
“What is this?”
“Your father’s letter,” I replied.
He pushed the paper across the table. I had already read it several weeks earlier, when Walt showed it to me during his final days. Nevertheless, I read it aloud.
Michael,
You have always believed success meant having more than everyone else. A bigger house, a better car, and a more impressive job title.
Your mother and I were proud of your achievements. We wanted you to have opportunities we never had. But somewhere along the way, you began measuring people by what they could offer you.
When your mother needed a home, you offered her internet links.
I hope one day you understand that a home is not measured in bedrooms. It is measured by the people willing to open their doors when someone needs help.
Love, Dad.
Michael stared at the letter.
“That’s it?”
“That is what your father wanted you to read,” I answered.
He let out a frustrated sigh. “So this is some kind of test? You are going to lecture us because we couldn’t immediately rearrange our lives?”
