My Parents Secretly Put Me $100,000 in Debt for My Younger Sister, Then Told Me I Had to Pay Because I Had the Money

The call came at 6:58 in the morning, while I was standing in my kitchen in my socks, waiting for the coffee maker to finish.

I almost didn’t answer. The number was local but not one I knew, and most calls that early are either wrong numbers or somebody trying to sell me a warranty for a car I don’t own. But something made me pick it up. Maybe it was the time. Nobody calls at seven unless they have to.

“Is this Lindsay Harper?”

“Yes.”

“Ms. Harper, this is Kevin Park. I’m the branch manager at Lakeshore Federal on Delmar Avenue. I’m sorry to call so early. I wanted to reach you before you left for work.”

I’d banked at Lakeshore for twelve years. My checking account, my savings, my mortgage. I’d met Kevin Park maybe twice. Once when I refinanced, and once at a holiday open house where he’d given me a cookie shaped like a snowman.

“Is something wrong?”

“I’m calling about your Lakeshore Platinum Business Card,” he said. “The account ending in 4417.”

I set my mug down on the counter.

“I don’t have a Platinum card.”

There was a short pause on the line.

“Ms. Harper, there’s an account in your name with a credit limit of one hundred thousand dollars. It was opened twenty-two days ago. It’s nearly maxed out.”

I laughed. Not because it was funny. Because it was so far from my life that my body didn’t know what else to do with it.

“There has to be a mistake,” I said. “I’ve never applied for anything like that.”

“Have you recently authorized anyone to use your identity? Or changed the phone number connected to your banking profile?”
