My twins came home from trick-or-treating in tears after their grandfather took their best Halloween candy as “payment” for taking them out. When I told my husband, he revealed his father had done the same thing to him as a child. Then he grabbed an empty candy bucket and left. What was he planning?
My eight-year-old twins had been looking forward to Halloween for weeks, but when their grandparents brought them home, neither boy was smiling.
Ethan walked straight past me without showing off his candy.
His brother, Owen, followed with his head down.
My mother-in-law, Carol, gave me an uncomfortable smile.
“They had a lovely time,” she said.
Before I could ask what was wrong, my father-in-law, Richard, carried both candy buckets into the kitchen.
I followed him a minute later and found him sitting at our table, surrounded by chocolates.
At first, I thought he was sorting the candy equally.
Then I noticed a separate pile beside his elbow. It contained nearly every large chocolate bar the boys had collected.
Richard unwrapped one and took a bite.
“Um… what are you doing?” I asked.
He looked annoyed.
“I walked them around for two hours. At my age, you didn’t think I’d do it for free, did you?”
I stared at him.
“I’m not getting any younger. I’ve earned a little something for my trouble.”
He reached for another chocolate.
“Besides, kids don’t need all that sugar. Relax. They’ve still got plenty left.”
Ethan and Owen stood beside the table, watching him.
Neither said a word.
I wanted to tell Richard to put everything back. But he was my husband’s father, and I’d never seen him behave quite like this.
