I raised my daughter, Ashley, on my own from the time she was two years old. For thirty years, she was the center of my world, the reason I worked exhausting hours, the reason I kept going when life became difficult, and the one person who could make even my worst days feel worthwhile.
Her mother, Melissa, left when Ashley was still a toddler. She told me she wasn’t ready to be a mother, then walked away and never came back.
I was only twenty-eight, working two jobs and struggling to keep a roof over our heads. I had no idea how to raise a little girl alone, but I knew one thing for certain. Ashley would never have to wonder whether she was loved.
Our life wasn’t glamorous. I burned pancakes almost every Sunday, bought secondhand coats, and learned how to braid hair from a library book because Ashley refused to go to school with what she called “Daddy’s crooked braids.”
But she never seemed to notice how little we had.
She could turn a cardboard box into a castle and an ordinary afternoon into Christmas morning. Her laughter filled our small apartment, and sometimes, when I came home exhausted from work, she would run into my arms as if I were the most wonderful man in the world.
When Ashley turned six, she gave me a gift that I would treasure for the rest of my life.
It was Father’s Day morning, and she woke me by whispering, “Daddy, close your eyes!”
I pulled on a shirt and did as she asked.
“Okay, open them!”
She stood beside my bed, beaming with pride. In her hands was a crooked tie cut from blue construction paper. Red hearts covered its surface, and across the middle, in purple crayon, she had written, “WORLD’S BEST DAD.”
