Part 1: The Words No Mother Expects to Hear
The night we brought our newborn daughter home, my five-year-old son stopped at the entrance to her nursery and refused to take another step.
I remember the moment with painful clarity.
My husband, Daniel, was downstairs struggling with the ridiculous number of bags we had somehow accumulated during a three-day hospital stay. I was standing beside the crib, exhausted, sore, emotional, and happier than I had been in months.
Our daughter was finally home.
I had just placed her gently beneath the pale pink blanket my mother had knitted when I noticed Max standing in the doorway.
“Come meet your sister in her room,” I whispered.
He didn’t move.
Normally, Max was incapable of standing still for more than five seconds. He ran through the house in socks, built elaborate forts from couch cushions, and asked questions faster than I could answer them.
But that night, he looked frozen.
His small fingers were wrapped around the doorframe.
His face had gone pale.
And he was staring at the crib as if something inside it frightened him.
“Max?”
His eyes moved from the baby to me.
Then he took one slow step backward.
“Mommy…”
“What is it, sweetheart?”
He swallowed.
“You brought home the wrong baby.”
For a second, I thought he was joking.
I even smiled.
“What?”
“That’s not my sister.”
I glanced at the crib.
Our daughter slept peacefully, one tiny fist tucked beside her cheek.
“Max, of course she is.”
He shook his head.
“No.”
His voice was barely louder than a whisper.
“That’s not her.”
