Robert had always treated taking out the trash like punishment, so when he suddenly volunteered night after night, I got suspicious. What I found in the alley made me think the worst, before one sentence changed everything.
For 29 years, taking out the trash was my job.
Not because Robert and I had ever formally divided our chores that way.
He simply hated doing it.
He would rinse dishes, scrub a bathroom, or spend an entire Saturday cleaning gutters without complaint.
But somehow, carrying a plastic bag 20 feet to the bins offended him personally.
More than once, I’d caught him balancing an empty cereal box on top of an already overflowing trash can instead of taking it outside.
So when he grabbed the bag after dinner on Monday, I laughed.
“Who are you, and where’s my husband?”
Robert didn’t laugh. “I’ve got it.”
He tied the bag, carried it through the back door, and disappeared.
I didn’t think much about it until Tuesday.
At exactly 9:30 p.m., he stood up from the couch. “I’ll take the trash.”
I looked toward the kitchen. “There’s barely anything in there.”
“I’ll do it anyway.”
This time, he was gone for almost 15 minutes.
When he came back, I asked what had taken so long.
“The bin lid was stuck.”
Our bin lid had never stuck.
On Wednesday night, I watched him.
At 9:30, Robert carried another half-full trash bag outside.
I went upstairs and looked through the bedroom window.
He headed toward the bins.
Then he kept walking past our garage and past the hedge.
He went toward the narrow alley behind our neighbors’ houses.
I stood there gripping the curtain.
