He sounded worried.
Almost afraid.
“Mr. Christopher left very specific instructions,” he continued. “Instructions that I was not permitted to discuss with anyone until after his funeral.”
I gripped the edge of the kitchen counter.
“Instructions about me?”
“Yes.”
I stopped breathing for a moment.
“Why?”
Another pause.
“That’s what I want to explain. But before I do, I need to ask you one more thing.”
“What?”
“Are you alone?”
I looked toward the hallway.
Lucas was still asleep in the small bedroom.
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Samuel lowered his voice.
“Then listen carefully. Has Justin contacted you since he dismissed you?”
“No.”
“Has anyone else from the Christopher family visited your home?”
“No.”
“Have you noticed anyone watching the house?”
My stomach tightened.
I glanced toward the kitchen window.
Outside, the street was quiet.
A streetlamp cast a pale yellow circle across the pavement.
“No,” I said slowly.
“Are you sure?”
“I think so.”
Samuel exhaled.
“All right. I need you to come to my office tomorrow morning.”
“What is this about?”
“I’ll tell you everything when you get here.”
“Samuel, I don’t have money for lawyers.”
“You don’t need money.”
His answer came immediately.
“Mr. Christopher already paid for everything.”
I closed my eyes.
That sentence frightened me more than anything else he had said.
“Paid for what?”
“I’ll see you tomorrow, Helena.”
“Wait.”
He didn’t hang up.
I could hear him breathing.
“Please,” I said. “I need to know something. Did Mr. Christopher know he was going to die?”
