We secretly booked seats on my husband’s birthday flight. Before he saw us, a flight attendant pulled me aside and whispered that we needed to leave.
“Dad…?”
William froze.
My 12-year-old daughter, Sophie, was half-hidden behind me in the aisle, still clutching the little birthday cake we’d brought onto the plane.
For one second, nobody moved.
Then William turned around.
I’ve been married to that man for 16 years.
I know his surprised face.
I know his annoyed face.
I know his “I forgot the reservation” face.
This wasn’t any of them.
He looked terrified.
“Sophie?”
She jumped out from behind me.
“Surprise!”
William didn’t smile.
His eyes moved from her to me.
“What are you doing here?”
The excitement disappeared from Sophie’s face.
“We came for your birthday.”
I tried to laugh.
“You’re supposed to look happier than that.”
Behind me, the flight attendant who had just told us we shouldn’t be on the plane closed her eyes.
That was when I knew something was seriously wrong.
William looked at her.
“Karen.”
She said quietly, “I didn’t know they were booked.”
“Booked for what?” I asked.
Neither answered.
Sophie looked between us.
“Dad?”
William finally seemed to notice other passengers were watching.
He forced a smile.
“Hey, sweetheart.”
He hugged her.
But even Sophie could tell something was wrong.
“Are you mad?”
“No.”
“Then why are you acting weird?”
William looked at me.
“Claire, can we talk?”
“Absolutely. Because someone just told me I shouldn’t be on my husband’s flight.”
Karen looked miserable.
William’s jaw tightened.
“Not here.”
That answer made my stomach drop.
