Eleven days after I closed on my new house, I was four hours away when my security system sent me a notification.
Person detected in driveway.
It was 10:14 on a Saturday morning. I was barefoot in my sister Rachel’s kitchen in Louisville, holding a mug of coffee and laughing at something her husband had said about his golf game.
I almost didn’t look. I figured it was a delivery driver. I’d ordered a new shower curtain and a set of towels, the first towels I’d ever picked out in my entire adult life without anybody else’s opinion.
I opened the live camera feed anyway.
Then I stopped breathing.
A yellow moving truck was backing into my driveway.
The driver’s door opened.
A man stepped out. He was tall, gray at the temples, wearing a navy quarter-zip pullover I’d bought him for Christmas three years before.
It was Mark.
My ex-husband.
The passenger door opened, and a woman climbed down. She was blond, in her forties, wearing white sneakers and big sunglasses pushed up on her head.
Vanessa. His new wife.
They stood together in my driveway for a moment, looking up at my house. Mark said something. Vanessa laughed.
Then they walked around to the back of the truck. Mark rolled the door up.
Together, they began unloading furniture into my house.
I didn’t call either of them.
I called the police.
But that came a few minutes later. First, I just stood in my sister’s kitchen with my coffee going cold, watching my ex-husband carry a television up my front walk like he lived there.
My name is Diane Whitaker. I’m fifty-three years old.
