My Husband Left Me And Our Seven Sons For My Sister Until Our Oldest Son Sent Him A Wedding Gift He Would Never Forget

My husband ended our eighteen-year marriage somewhere between dinner and bath time.

I was standing at the kitchen counter, cutting apples into slices for the little ones. Ben, our two-year-old, only eats apples if they’re cut into “moons.” Half circles. Not wedges. Not cubes. Moons. If you give him a wedge, he throws it on the floor and screams like you’ve insulted his whole family.

So I was cutting moons.

And he said, very calmly, like he was telling me the weather:

“Let’s not make a scene. I’m leaving you. I’m with Claire now.”

I thought I’d heard him wrong.

I actually thought that. For a second. I thought he’d said something else. I’m leaving early tomorrow. I’m going to call Claire. Something normal.

“Claire?” I said.

He looked tired. That’s what I remember most. Not guilty. Not sorry. Not scared. Just tired. Like a man at the end of a long workday who wanted to sit down.

“My sister Claire?” I said.

“Yes,” Daniel said.

He sighed.

“Please don’t start screaming.”

“I haven’t said anything.”

“I know how this is going to go, Jenna. I know you. I know exactly how this is going to go.”

“Then maybe,” I said slowly, “you can explain to me how my husband of eighteen years is sleeping with my little sister.”

He rubbed his forehead with two fingers. The way he does when one of the boys asks him a math question he doesn’t know the answer to.
