My MIL kept insisting she needed time alone with my newborn, but I couldn’t understand why. Then I found a hidden box beneath the brand-new car seat she’d secretly installed. When I opened it, I realized her obsession with my son had started long before I knew. What was she hiding?
Three days after I gave birth to my son, Noah, my mother-in-law, Linda, started asking to take him out alone.
At first, I thought I’d misunderstood her.
I was sitting on the couch with Noah asleep against my chest, running on maybe two hours of sleep, when Linda looked down at him and said she could take him for a drive while I rested.
“Just for some bonding time,” she said.
I looked at my three-day-old baby and then at her.
“No, thanks. I’m okay.”
Linda smiled, but something about her expression bothered me. It was as if I’d declined an offer she had expected me to accept.
She asked the next day again. Then again the day after that.
Each time, she became a little more insistent and a little less patient.
“You’ll never learn to let go if you don’t start now,” she told me once, smiling in a way that never quite reached her eyes.
Let go.
Noah wasn’t even a week old.
I was still sore from giving birth.
I cried over ridiculous things, forgot what I had walked into rooms for, and woke from 20-minute naps convinced I’d heard Noah crying when he was sleeping peacefully beside me.
Maybe that was why Linda’s requests bothered me so much.
I didn’t want to let go.
I wanted to hold my son.
I wanted to stare at his tiny fingernails, count his breaths, and keep checking that his blanket wasn’t too close to his face.
