They Laughed When I Scratched the Ticket—Then I Won $11 Million and Told Nobody.

My name is Dolores Fenn. I am 73. My son’s wife gave me a dollar-store birthday card with a scratch ticket inside as a joke. They laughed while I scratched it at the table. I won eleven million dollars.

I thanked them for the card and told no one. That was ten months ago. Tomorrow morning, a letter will arrive at their house, and my suitcase is packed so I can watch them read it.

The ticket cost two dollars. The price sticker was still stuck to the front of the card. It was the only gift Daniel and Renata gave me that year. “Maybe you will win your bus fare, Dolores,” Renata said.

Daniel laughed before I could answer. “That would be something.”

The grandchildren laughed too, because their parents were laughing. I do not blame children for following the room they are in, but I remember it.I scratched the ticket with my thumbnail while they served the cake I had baked for my own birthday. Under the silver film, three matching amounts appeared. I looked again because I thought I must have read it wrong.

Then I folded the ticket and put it in my cardigan pocket.

“No bus fare,” I said. “Thank you for the card, honey. It is a pretty card.”

Renata gave me a quick smile and went back to cutting cake. Daniel was already talking about something else. Nobody noticed that I had stopped eating.

It is astonishing what a person can do with a calm face and one cardigan pocket.I had lived with Daniel and Renata for four years by then, ever since my Harold passed. I had not expected to stay forever. I had expected we would help one another for a while, which is different.
