I brought my husband his favorite breakfast to the school where he’s the principal. I wanted to surprise him after weeks of long hours. But when I heard his voice over the intercom, I stopped outside his office. By the end of his announcement, I was the one who got the surprise.
I decided to surprise my husband at work with brunch.
Michael had been the principal of the same middle school for almost six years.
Lately, he’d been leaving before seven every morning and coming home exhausted.
He kept saying October was always chaos at school, so I figured I’d do something nice.
I packed his favorite breakfast sandwich, fruit, coffee, and cinnamon rolls from the bakery near our house.
I didn’t tell him I was coming.
The secretary at the front desk recognized me immediately.
“Good morning, Claire! What brings you here?”
“Thought I’d surprise my husband.”
She glanced at the bag.
“That’s sweet. He’s doing announcements right now. You can wait outside his office.”
I thanked her and headed down the hallway.
Michael’s voice came over the intercom.
He reminded students about picture day, soccer practice, and a missing backpack.
I stood there smiling, listening to my husband sound so professional.
Then his tone softened.
“And before we finish, I want to thank someone very special. Lily, from seventh grade, has taught me more about being a father than I ever expected.”
I stopped walking.
“She’s given me a second chance to become the parent I should have been years ago.”
My stomach tightened.
“And Lily, I want you to know how proud I am to finally be able to call you my daughter.”
