My 11-year-old daughter had spent two weekends building something she couldn’t wait to share with our neighbors. Less than a day after she proudly opened it, she screamed for me from the front yard, and what I found there changed everything.
At 6:42 a.m. yesterday morning, my 11-year-old daughter screamed my name from the front yard so loudly that I nearly dropped my coffee.
“Mom! Come here! You need to see this!”
Something in Carly’s voice made me put the mug down immediately.
I ran outside in my slippers.
She was standing beside the little wooden library she’d spent the previous day treating like the grand opening of the New York Public Library.
For one awful second, I thought somebody had smashed it.
Nothing was broken.
The pale blue box still stood beside our mailbox, its yellow roof slightly crooked in the way Carly insisted gave it “character.”
Even the yellow paw print near the bottom was still there.
Our dog had stepped in wet paint while Carly and my husband, Dean, were finishing the library.
I’d suggested painting over it.
Carly had looked horrified.
“That’s the logo now.”
So, the paw print stayed.
Now she stood in Dean’s old sweatshirt and pajama pants, staring through the glass door.
Several books had been pushed aside, leaving an empty space on the bottom shelf.
At the back was something I couldn’t quite make out.
“Did you put that there?” Carly asked.
“No.”
“Dad?”
“He’s still asleep.”
She reached for the latch.
“Carly, wait.”
Too late.
She opened the door, crouched, and gasped.
I stepped beside her.
“What? Carly, what is it?”
Then I saw it.
