I thought my dad was letting my boss’s wife cheat him out of thousands. Then one thing he found under the pool changed the entire situation.
The elderly woman reached my car before I’d even shut the door.
“Are you Tom’s daughter?”
I nodded.
“I’m Emma.”
She grabbed my hand with both of hers.
“Your father may have just solved something that’s been ruining my life for two years.”
I stared at her.
Behind us, my boss, Richard, was shouting at one of the police officers.
“This is private property!”
Melissa stood near the front door, crying.
My dad was beside his truck with his arms folded, looking calmer than anyone had a right to look in that situation.
I pointed toward the house.
“What is happening?”
The woman took a breath.
“My name is Evelyn.”
Then she looked toward the backyard.
“And part of what’s underneath that pool belongs to me.”

He isn’t the cheapest contractor in town.
He also isn’t remotely close to the most expensive.
What he is, annoyingly, is careful.
He photographs everything.
Keeps receipts. Labels old parts before removing them.
And if a married couple owns a property together, he wants both signatures before he touches anything expensive.
I used to tease him about it.
“Nobody reads all that paperwork, Dad.”
He’d say:
“I do.”
That habit became important.
My boss, Richard, had asked about Dad after hearing me mention his business.
