On the Way Home from Kindergarten, My Grandson Told Me Mom and Dad Had a Secret Even the Cops Couldn’t Know About – I Laughed at First, but by the Time He Finished, I Raced to My Daughter’s House

My grandson whispered that his parents were hiding something in the garage, and I turned the car around. I expected a harmless surprise, but what I found reached back forty years.

I picked up my five-year-old grandson Noah from kindergarten a couple of times a week and took him back to my place until his parents finished work.

The rides were some of my favorite moments. Noah could talk Grandma’s ear off about anything, from dinosaurs to what somebody had brought for lunch.

“I’m going to tell you a secret.”

That afternoon, he was buckled into his car seat, still chattering about the day, when he suddenly lowered his voice.

“Grandma, I’m going to tell you a secret Mom and Dad said even the police can’t know.”

I laughed. “Good Lord, what are those two up to now?”

Noah looked serious enough to make me glance at him in the mirror. “It’s in the garage.”

I smiled. “What’s in the garage?”

“It’s in the garage.”

“I’m not supposed to tell you. Dad said nobody can know until it’s ready.”

I shook my head, picturing my daughter and son-in-law trying to build something, wrap a present, or pull off some surprise without Noah giving it away.

He’d never been good at keeping secrets. Once, at Christmas, he’d announced what was in every box before we’d finished breakfast.

“Did your dad say anything else?” I asked.

I shook my head.

Noah picked at the strap across his chest. “Mom said, ‘What are we going to do if she finds out?'”

My smile faded. “Who was she talking about?”

He pointed at me. “You.”

I felt my hands tighten around the steering wheel. My family liked to joke that I could turn a small problem into a full investigation before anyone had finished explaining it.
