Two strangers in expensive suits showed up at my door and said I’d won $1 million. I hadn’t entered any contest, but the letter had my name on it — and by the time their black SUV turned onto a deserted forest road, I knew something was terribly wrong.
The two men on my porch wore expensive black suits.
One held a cream-colored envelope with my name printed across the front.
“Congratulations, Tanya,” he said. “You’ve won $1,000,000.”
I almost laughed.
“I didn’t enter anything.”
“You didn’t have to. Your name was selected through an automatic promotional drawing.”
He handed me a letter with an official-looking seal and a confirmation number.
My full name appeared under it.
They knew exactly who I was.
At 29, I’d never won anything bigger than a grocery-store gift card.
I read the letter twice, searching for the catch.
“Where do I collect the money?”
“We’ll take you through the paperwork,” the taller man said. “Our driver is waiting.”
A black SUV sat at the curb.
I called my husband, Mark, before getting in.
He didn’t answer.
For the first 20 minutes, the men discussed taxes, identification, and payment arrangements.
They sounded practiced enough that I began imagining what $1,000,000 might change.
Then the driver turned off the main road.
Trees crowded both sides of the SUV.
The pavement disappeared beneath the tires.
“Where are we going?”
Neither man answered.
“I thought we were going to an office.”
The passenger exchanged a glance with the driver.
That was when I stopped thinking about the money.
The SUV slowed beside a small cabin.
There were no signs, other cars, or buildings that resembled a prize office.
