Two Pieces of Paper
The day I found out I had inherited fifty million dollars was also the day I found out I was divorced.
I learned both things in the same office, in the same ten minutes, from the same man.
His name was Mr. Henderson. He was a private banker at Lakeshore Trust on LaSalle Street in downtown Chicago, and he had the calm, careful voice of a man who delivers life-changing news for a living. He wore a gray suit and a wedding ring and reading glasses he kept pushing up his nose.
He set two pieces of paper side by side on his desk.
On the left was a statement. Kessler Family Trust, Beneficiary Distribution. My name at the top. And a number near the bottom with so many zeros I had to count them twice.
On the right was a court judgment.
“Hannah,” Mr. Henderson said. “Before we go any further, I need to ask you something.”
“Okay.”
“Did you know a divorce was entered in your name last July?”
I looked from one page to the other. Fifty million dollars on the left. Judgment for Dissolution of Marriage on the right.
“That can’t be ours,” I said. “We’re married.”
He didn’t argue. He just turned the folder around so I could read it.
In the Circuit Court of DuPage County, Illinois. In re the Marriage of Nathan R. Pierce, Petitioner, and Hannah L. Pierce, Respondent. A case number. A judge’s name. A date stamp in purple ink.
“The names match,” Mr. Henderson said gently. “The dates of birth match. Our compliance team runs a public records check before we open accounts of this size. The judgment was entered nine months ago.”
