After My In-Laws Moved Out, I Went to Strip the Guest Bed – But What I Found Under the Mattress Made My Blood Run Cold

For months, I’d respected my mother-in-law’s insistence on keeping the guest room private. The morning after she moved out, I discovered she’d been keeping something from me that was quite disturbing.

The guest room finally smelled of nothing. Not Eleanor’s rose hand cream, not Harold’s aftershave, except for the faint, yeasty warmth I’d never been able to place. I brushed it off because cool October air was drifting through the open window, and the sun’s rays appeared across a bare mattress.

I stood at the foot of the bed with my hands on my hips, grinning like an idiot. Six whole months, and now the room was mine again.

I brushed it off.

“Bye, guest room,” I said out loud. “Hello, home office!”

I grabbed the corner of the fitted sheet and yanked.

It didn’t budge.

“Oh, come on.”

I gave the sheet another yank and thought about my own mother, who had also been a closed-door woman. I also thought about the things that had come out from behind those doors when I was 12. I pushed the thought away.

My mother-in-law (MIL), Eleanor, wasn’t my mother. My husband’s mother was a churchgoing woman who color-coded my spice rack and once apologized for using too much dish soap.

Still, she preferred the guest bedroom door closed.

I pushed the thought away.

I braced a knee on the mattress and wrenched the elastic up over the corner, muttering something unkind as I struggled.
