The box was white, the size of a small suitcase, tied with a pale blue satin ribbon.
A nurse carried it into Emily’s hospital room at nine fifteen in the morning, holding it out in front of her like it might break.
“Someone left this at reception for your family,” she said. “The front desk said it was dropped off about an hour ago. No name.”

The other two babies were asleep in their clear plastic bassinets beside her, wrapped up tight in pink-and-blue-striped hospital blankets, like three little burritos in a row.
“From who?” Emily asked.
“No card on the outside,” the nurse said. “It’s addressed to ‘The Carter Triplets.’” She set it on the foot of the bed. “Congratulations again. Ring if you need anything.”
She left.
Emily looked at me. I looked at the box.
“Well,” I said. “Open it.”
She pulled the ribbon. It slid off like water. She lifted the lid.

Inside, nested in layers of white tissue paper, were three miniature wedding dresses.
Real ones. Not costumes. Not doll clothes. Real tiny wedding gowns, small enough for a newborn. Ivory silk. Lace sleeves, so fine you could see light through them. Rows of tiny pearl buttons down the back, each one smaller than a grain of rice. And on top of each dress, folded carefully, a tiny veil of white tulle on a little satin headband.
