Eight Days After Our Wedding, My MIL Showed Up With a Mobile Notary and I Realized Something Was Very Wrong

The Keys I Kept

The notary looked more uncomfortable than I felt.

That was the first thing I noticed when my mother-in-law opened a leather folder across my kitchen table.

Rain tapped against the windows. A pot roast sat cooling in the oven, the one I’d started at three o’clock because it was Russell’s favorite. My coffee had gone cold beside my elbow.

My husband, Russell Pierce, stood near the counter with his tie loosened, behaving as though this were an ordinary Tuesday evening.

We had married in early November.

We had been husband and wife for eight days.

And now his mother was sitting at my kitchen table with legal papers I had never seen, and a stranger carrying an official stamp.

Marjorie Pierce smiled at me.

She was eighty-three years old. Small and straight-backed, with silver hair set in tight curls and a navy wool coat she hadn’t taken off. Pearl earrings. A gold brooch shaped like a bumblebee. Lipstick the exact shade of a maraschino cherry.

“All you need to do is sign, Valerie,” she said. “This is simply responsible planning for people our age.”

She slid the folder across the table toward me. A heavy silver pen sat on top of it, already uncapped.

I looked down at the pages.

The first referred to a durable financial power of attorney. My name at the top. Russell’s name as agent.

The second proposed placing certain inherited assets into a marital trust.

The third would make Russell co-trustee and primary beneficiary.

Another page, near the back, appeared to transfer ownership interests in a property-holding company into that trust.
