I put up with my mother-in-law’s little ways of reminding my daughter and me that we didn’t belong for far too long. But at her birthday dinner, she finally crossed a line my husband refused to ignore.
The second Grace opened her front door, her face changed.
A man in his 60s stood on the porch, holding a leather folder.
I’d met him once before at my wedding.
She stared at him.
Her face changed.
“What are you doing here?”
The man looked past her toward Liam.
“Liam called me.”
Grace turned around.
“Liam?”
My husband stood beside me, one hand resting on Amber’s shoulder. The bottle of wine he’d brought Grace was still sitting unopened on the sideboard.
“Liam called me.”
Liam’s voice was calm.
“Let him in.”
Grace, my mother-in-law (MIL), looked like she wanted to argue, but the man had already stepped inside.
Then he saw the dining room. More specifically, he saw the two chairs wrapped in thick, clear plastic.
Amber’s and mine.
Every other chair was uncovered.
“Let him in.”
The man frowned.
“What is this?”
Grace crossed her arms.
“Nothing.”
Liam looked at him.
“Mom says Sasha and Amber aren’t real family, so she doesn’t want them ruining the house.”
My MIL’s head snapped toward him.
“I never said that!”
“What is this?”
Amber, six and with no interest in protecting anyone’s pride, said softly, “Grandma said we have outside energy.”
My chest tightened all over again.
The man looked at Grace.
“Outside energy?”
Grace waved a hand.
“Can we not make this ridiculous?”
Liam’s jaw tightened.
My chest tightened.
“Amber asked if she was dirty.”
Grace went still.
“You laughed,” Liam said.
