I’d expected one slightly awkward family dinner and maybe a few uncomfortable silences. Instead, one look at my son’s girlfriend cracked open a piece of my past I’d never known was missing, and suddenly I was questioning how much of my own story had ever truly been mine.
“Mom, please don’t judge her before you meet her.”
Edgar said it so seriously that I stopped smiling.
My son was 29, worked in tech, built his own computers, and could spend an entire weekend gaming without noticing the time. He’d never cared much about dating, so when he told me a few months earlier that he had a girlfriend, I’d assumed he was joking.
Her name was Zoe.
“Mom, please don’t judge her before you meet her.”
They’d met online, discovered they lived close enough to meet in person, and gone from gaming partners to something Edgar clearly didn’t want me ruining.
“Why would I judge her?”
“She’s emo.”
I waited.
“Like, really emo.”
“Why would I judge her?”
“Edgar, you’re 29. I’m not grounding your girlfriend for wearing black.”
“Mom.”
There was enough worry in that one word to make me stop teasing.
“Fine. I promise.”
He relaxed, then glanced toward the dining room.
“And Grandma?”
“I’m not grounding your girlfriend for wearing black.”
My mother, Charlotte, had come over for Sunday dinner because I’d invited her. I wanted Zoe’s first visit to feel warm.
“Your grandmother judges parking spaces,” I said. “But I’ll keep an eye on her, sweetheart.”
The doorbell rang.
Edgar moved faster than I’d seen him move in years.

Zoe stood on the porch in a black pleated skirt, striped tights, heavy boots, and a faded band T-shirt. Her dark hair had red streaks. Thick eyeliner framed her eyes, and silver rings covered most of her fingers.
