Part 2 — What Elon Said After the Door Closed

Elon called me forty minutes after I left the dinner.

I was at my parents’ house. Sophie was asleep in the portable crib my mother kept in the spare bedroom from the weeks after Sophie was born, when my mother had visited and held the baby while I slept for the first time in six days and she told me afterward that the dark circles under my eyes frightened her more than she wanted to admit.

My mother had seen. She had seen the exhaustion. She had seen the loneliness. She had not seen the affair because I had not told her, not out of loyalty to Elon but out of the particular shame that arrives when a woman discovers her husband is unfaithful and the first thing she feels is not anger but the belief that she should have been enough.

I was enough. The phone call I overheard was not evidence of my inadequacy. It was evidence of his.

Elon’s voice on the phone was the voice I had heard many times. The negotiation voice. The voice he used during arguments when he wanted to steer the conversation away from what he had done and toward what I was feeling, because feelings could be managed and facts could not.

He told me I had humiliated him in front of both families. He told me placing divorce papers on the table during an anniversary dinner was vindictive. He told me whatever I thought I had heard on the phone was being blown out of proportion.

I told him I had not blown anything. I told him I had recorded the call. I told him the recording captured his exact words. I told him Patricia Webb had the recording, the bank statements, the hotel charges, and the jewelry receipt.
