For years, I thought I knew my daughter well enough to tell when something was wrong. Then my husband admitted she’d trusted him with a secret she couldn’t bring herself to tell me.
I sat up so fast that the sheets tangled around my knees. Alan had just closed the bedroom door behind him with a click that was too quiet, too careful, and his face was doing something strange.
I sat up so fast.
“What’s wrong?” I asked my husband that night after going to bed.
Alan didn’t answer right away. He just stood there, one hand still on the doorknob, as if he were trying to decide which side of it he wanted to be on.
Let me explain how we got there, because without the backstory, you won’t understand why that look on his face nearly stopped my heart.
“What’s wrong?”

Alan and I adopted Iris when she was four. She’d lost her whole family in a terrible accident. By the time the adoption agency called us, she was a tiny girl who flinched at loud noises and slept with her shoes on, just in case.
My husband and I had decided long ago that we’d adopt instead of having a child of our own. In hindsight, I don’t think I quite understood what I was getting myself into. All I wanted to do was give an abandoned child a chance at a good life.
She’d lost her whole family.
Becoming Iris’ parents wasn’t always easy. She’d already been through more than any four-year-old should have to endure, so we knew it would take a long time for her to feel safe and to understand and believe we weren’t going anywhere.
But little by little, we became a family.
Alan was a fantastic father.
