My Boss’s Wife Refused to Pay My Dad $7,800 for Nine Days of Pool Repairs, Then Tried to Use My Job Against Him

What the Water Remembered

Melissa Cole didn’t even look at the invoice.

She looked at me.

“My husband,” she said, “is your daughter’s boss.”

My stomach dropped so fast I felt it in my knees.

We were standing on the stone patio behind her house, the three of us, in the late afternoon sun. Behind her, the pool my father had spent nine days bringing back to life lay perfectly still. Clear blue. So clear you could count the tiles on the bottom.

I stepped forward. “Dad, let me talk to Richard.”

My father lifted one hand. Gently. The way he used to stop me from running into the street when I was five.

Then he turned his head and looked at the pool.

He looked at it for a long time. Five seconds. Ten. Just studying that still, blue water like it was saying something only he could hear.

And then he smiled.

“Fine,” he said.

That was all. Fine.

I thought my father had just given up. I thought I had watched the proudest man I knew fold like a lawn chair, because of me.
