My Brother In Law Ruined My New Car Until I Taught Him A Lesson

“HOW DARE YOU?”

Jake’s voice hit my ear so hard I had to pull the phone away from my head.

I was standing in our driveway beside our brand-new crossover. The rear passenger door was open. I was staring at the back seat. At the big red stain soaked into the white leather. At the muddy floor mats. At the crushed tortilla chips ground into the carpet. At the sticky plastic cup rolled up under the passenger seat with an inch of something brown still sloshing in the bottom.

Behind me, I heard the screen door bang. My husband, Timothy, stepped out onto the porch holding his own phone.

“Yes,” I said.

“You wanted to humiliate me, Elle!”

“No, Jake,” I said. “I wanted you to stop hiding behind them.”

I grew up without a car.

That’s the first thing you need to know. My mom raised me and my little sister by herself, on a cashier’s salary at a grocery store, in a two-bedroom apartment above a laundromat. We took the bus everywhere. To school. To the doctor. To the grocery store, where we’d carry everything home in plastic bags that cut into our fingers.
