For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The children stood beside the vehicles, looking from their mother to me. One of them held a bright yellow beach bucket. Another had already taken off his shoes, apparently expecting to run straight toward the sand.
Vanessa looked at me as if I had personally ruined the entire vacation.
“Clara, this is ridiculous. You’re seriously going to leave your grandchildren standing outside?”
I looked at the children.
“No, sweetheart. I’m not angry with you. You haven’t done anything wrong.”
Then I looked at Vanessa.
“But your mother should have asked before bringing you here.”
Vanessa’s smile disappeared.
“Don’t talk about me like I’m not standing here.”
“Then listen carefully. I told you no. You decided that my answer didn’t matter. Now you’re discovering that it does.”
Ethan finally stepped forward.
“Mom, can we please just talk about this?”
“We can talk. But nobody is coming inside.”
He rubbed his forehead.
“It’s getting late. The kids are tired. We drove several hours.”
“I understand.”
“Then let us in.”
“No.”
His face changed.

This time, I didn’t.
Vanessa pulled out her phone.
“Fine. I’ll call someone.”
“Who?”
She hesitated.
“Someone who can explain to you that you can’t treat family this way.”
I almost smiled.
“Please do.”
She walked several steps away and began making a call.
Meanwhile, Ethan approached the gate.
