My name’s Adam. I’m 34. And if you told me a year ago that my own brother would try to sue me while simultaneously asking me to pay for the lawyer doing the suing, I would have laughed in your face.
I would have offered you a glass of water, asked if you were feeling okay, and then laughed again just to make sure you understood how absurd that sounded.
But here we are.
Life has a funny way of making you the punchline to jokes you didn’t even know were being written.
Let me back up and give you the full picture because this one needs context.
I grew up in a small town outside of Knoxville, Tennessee. My parents, Gail and Hershel, were the kind of people who believed that family was everything.
And by everything, I mean they believe family was an excuse to never set boundaries, never say no, and never hold anyone accountable for anything as long as they shared your last name.
My older brother, Sutton, is 2 years ahead of me.
Growing up, Sutton was the golden child. He was the quarterback, the homecoming king, the guy who walked into a room and made every adult within a 50ft radius start grinning like they’d won the lottery.
I was the quiet one. The kid who liked reading, who built things in the garage, who kept his head down and got decent grades without anyone noticing or caring.
Now, I’m not going to sit here and pretend I had some tragic childhood.
I didn’t.
My parents loved me. They fed me, clothed me, showed up to enough of my stuff to not qualify as neglectful.
But there was always this unspoken understanding in our house that Sutton was the main event and I was the opening act that nobody really came to see.
What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
