My charge nurse, a woman who normally handled even the most demanding emergencies with remarkable composure, suddenly pulled me away from a patient whose condition required our immediate attention.
Her fingers tightened around the sleeve of my scrubs. She barely glanced at the medical monitor before looking directly into my eyes and quietly explaining that my daughter’s school principal was waiting on the hospital’s main emergency line.

His phone, conveniently, was completely switched off and tucked away inside his khaki pocket.
My name is Shelby Sorenson. I am thirty-six years old, work as a trauma nurse in a chronically understaffed emergency department, and have raised Delaney entirely by myself since the difficult year she turned two.
