PART 2 — THE WOMAN WHO CLEANED HER HUSBAND’S SECRET LIFE
I was standing in another woman’s bedroom, holding a dust cloth, when I heard my husband say the words that finally told me what twenty-eight years of marriage had been worth to him.
“Did you talk to the bank?” the woman asked downstairs.
“Not yet,” he answered. “I’m waiting until everything is settled.”
“And what about your wife?”
There was a pause.
Then he laughed.
“Don’t worry about her, sweetheart. She’s already signed everything.”
I gripped the edge of the dresser so hard that my fingers hurt.
Twenty-eight years.
Twenty-eight Christmas mornings. Twenty-eight wedding anniversaries. Thousands of dinners cooked, work shirts washed, and prayers whispered for a man who was standing downstairs discussing me like an old piece of furniture he couldn’t wait to throw away.
I heard the refrigerator door open.
“Are you sure she doesn’t suspect anything?” the woman asked.
“Suspect what? She’s too busy cleaning people’s houses to know what’s going on.”
They both laughed.
I looked at the framed photograph on the nightstand.
My husband was smiling beside a woman with long blonde hair. They were standing on a beach, his arm around her waist.
He had told me that trip was a business conference in Florida.
I had packed his suitcase.
I remembered ironing the white shirt he was wearing in that photograph.
Then the woman said something that made every muscle in my body go still.
“Well, I hope she’s not as stupid as you say, because I don’t want another delay. You promised we’d have the money by Christmas.”
What happened next changed everything… FULL STORY on the next page.
