So when my phone rang a little after noon on a Tuesday, and I saw the school’s number, I assumed he was sick.

My stomach tightened.
“Was he hurt?”
“No.”

“No.”
That should have made me feel better.

I grabbed my purse and told my supervisor I had to leave.
