“Hey, Elise. You missed a spot.”
Kayla Thorne held her phone up high and laughed. The whole nurses’ station laughed with her.
Dana Whitlock laughed too. She hated that she did. But laughing was easier than becoming the next target, and everybody on the fourth floor knew that.
At the far end of the hallway, Elise Maddox pushed a yellow cleaning cart past the big blue banner that hung over the lobby entrance. Honor. Service. Medicine. A gold anchor sat in the middle of it.
Elise didn’t look up. She didn’t answer. She bent down, set out a yellow caution wet floor sign, and kept mopping.
“Look at her,” Kayla whispered, zooming in. “A year ago, she thought she was a real nurse.”
“She was a real nurse,” Dana said quietly.

Kayla giggled and kept filming Elise’s back.
Tyler Brooks, one of the techs, pointed down the hall with a gloved finger. “Hey, Maddox! Room four’s got a spill. Try not to take all day.”
Elise lifted one hand in a small wave. No anger. No excuse. She reached into the cart for a fresh glove, and as she pulled it over her wrist, her fingers trembled a little.
Dana watched that tremble. She had been watching it for eleven months.
Eleven months ago, Elise Maddox had started at the United States Naval Medical Center as a quiet civilian nurse. Brown hair always falling out of a messy bun. Brown eyes that always looked tired. Scrubs two sizes too big, like she’d borrowed them from somebody else. She never talked about where she’d worked before. She never came to the staff parties or the birthday cakes in the break room. She ate lunch alone at the same table every day, always in the same chair.
