Snow swept sideways across the deserted Main Street of the small American town, gathering against parked cars, storefront steps, and the curb beneath the old streetlamps. By that hour, most businesses had already locked their doors. The sidewalks were empty. Even the highway traffic several blocks away had grown quiet.
Emily Carter was preparing to turn off the last row of lights inside Carter Family Bakery when she thought she heard something outside.
At first, she assumed it was the wind.
Then she heard it again.
A faint voice.
“Please… somebody.”
Emily froze.
She hurried toward the front window and pressed a hand against the cold glass.
There was someone outside.
“Oh my God.”
She unlocked the door and stepped into the storm.
A man was slumped near the side of the building, his coat soaked through, snow collecting across his shoulders. He looked exhausted and disoriented.
“Sir?”
Emily hurried toward him.
“Sir, can you hear me?”
His eyes opened slowly.
“Can you hear me? Please.”
He tried to move but seemed to have little strength left.
Emily slipped one of his arms over her shoulders.
“I’m here. You’re okay. Come on. Don’t stay out here.”
The man looked at her as though he was trying to understand whether she was real.
“Just a few more steps,” Emily said.
She guided him through the bakery door and toward one of the small tables near the counter.
“Here. Sit down.”
He lowered himself into the chair.
“Thank you.”
His voice was barely above a whisper.
“You’re very kind.”
Emily shook her head.
“Let’s get you warm first.”
